Life in the UAE is a constant battle with dust, sand and sandstorms, especially in summer. But dust storms can occur at any time of the year. Fine sand dust crawls under the doors and through cracks in the windows and penetrates literally everywhere. Particularly vicious storms obscure the sky and the sun for days on end. Leaving the house these days becomes extremely dangerous.
While sandstorms are not very severe inside densely built cities like Dubai, they are unforgiving in the middle of the desert where there is nothing to hold the sand. These exceptional photographs of deserted roads and sand-swept infrastructure show how intense sandstorms are affecting civilization in the Middle East. These photos were taken by Sydney-based photographer Irinej Herok.
