This night, at 5:00 am local time, British Colum­bia wel­comed ath­letes from 82 coun­tries. The open­ing of the 2010 Win­ter Olympics took place at BC Place in Van­cou­ver. The open­ing cer­e­mo­ny brought out the diver­si­ty and her­itage of the Cana­di­an nation, as well as Cana­di­an Indige­nous peo­ple. The start of the games in Van­cou­ver was over­shad­owed. The pho­to shows a can­dle in mem­o­ry of the Geor­gian luger Nodar Kumar­i­tashvili, who died on Feb­ru­ary 12 dur­ing train­ing.
